Thoughtful Gifts for Loved Ones with Dementia

Writer: Pure Heart HomecarePure Heart Homecare

Buying gifts for a loved one with Dementia can sometimes be difficult. Worry not! There is a wide range of meaningful and practical gifts which can support independence, create happy memories and encourage communication...

One of the most meaningful gifts you can give is a photograph album or scrapbook of their personal life story; helping to trigger wonderful memories and creating talking points, encouraging them to share their stories with loved ones, friends and carers. Include pictures of the important people in their life, detail memories from their childhood and adulthood along with important life events, important dates such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Jigsaw Puzzles

One of the main symptoms of dementia is memory loss. This can be quite overlooked during the early stages of dementia, but with time, the ability to recall names, places and events will eventually occur.

As jigsaws are mentally stimulating, they can help with brain health, and by using both sides of the brain, they can also aid with the recognition of shapes and colours, as well as improve problem solving skills.

Jigsaws are also lovely to do together – as are games and puzzles. Simple board games Scrabble, dominoes, and card games for example, all help keep the mind active and provide another opportunity to enjoy some valuable time together.

Colouring Books

Colouring books offer relaxing, calming way advance fine motor skills, aiding hand-eye coordination which in turn can assist with daily tasks, such as getting dressed and preparing food, to further promote their independence.

Not only that, but colouring can help enhance concentration, focus and engagement which can slow cognitive decline.

There is also a wonderful sense of achievement and pride when a colouring is completed.

Weighted Blanket

Individuals with dementia can often experience anxiety and feel irritable which can be distressing for them and their loved ones.

Weighted blankets provide a sense of calm and comfort, and can help reduce anxiety, as well as help with sensory issues and bodily awareness through periods of disconnection.

We hope the above has provided you with some ideas, and remember, the most important and valuable gift you can offer is time.

Doing a Jigsaw Puzzle. Playing Scrabble and board games. Wrapped in a weighted blanket. Looking at old photographs.
